Best Malware/Virus Cleanup Tools

There are tons and tons of tools on the internet. We have selected our top picks to help clean up hundreds of computers. They are all free and easy to download.

Malwarebytes

This is our "workhorse", favorite. This is how we run our first scans. It can be used in nearly any environment. Safe mode is the best option because it works 100%. You can download or do other things in regular Windows by booting into safe mode. This will often resolve many issues. To quickly locate and eliminate issues like "Malwarebytes disable startup", we usually perform "quick scanners" or "threat scanning". We recommend the trial version (free) so it doesn't conflict with your current antivirus software.

SUPERAntiSpyware

Malwarebytes will sometimes provide a "first reaction" to a problem that Malwarebytes has not resolved. It's fast and very effective, too.

WinsockFix

This tool executes a couple of commands to clear up any problems in the "TCP stacks". This tool will reset your default internet protocol settings and take control of the core of your computer's internet communications. If you continue to get odd popups, it is useful.

ComboFix

This tool is another powerful one that can do a lot of things and restores many items that were corrupted by malware.

If you don't get cared for by these guys, then we can move to more powerful, but potentially more dangerous software. This software runs an increased risk of causing your computer to stop booting. These are riskier because they are more aggressive.

TDDS Killer

Rootkits are very dangerous and can sometimes be quite difficult to eliminate. TDDS Killer is a popular, effective tool to remove some common rootkits. It can kill any rootkit you may have.

Hitman Pro

This is the most dangerous tool we use. This software has the highest chance of causing the computers to stop booting, but it also captures the most harmful things that have not been caught by any other software. This is the last resort.

Norton Power Eraser

This can also be a very dangerous tool, and should not be used as your first-line defense. This can be used if everything else has failed.

You should remember that not all malware is malicious. Some "junkware" may not be detected by these tools. You will need to remove them yourself using the Add/Remove Programs. Resetting your browser is another option if you are still having problems. You can refer to our other article for assistance, or you can do a quick Google search to find step-by-step.
